Why I love the C9 program

C9 means 9 days of clean living; it is the way to reboot your metabolism and learn how you can build healthy habits for better living and improved health and physical stamina while at the same time staying true to who you are.

What I used to hate about the traditional diets is how restrictive they are. And how you actually count days and hours until you end it so you can dive back into the fridge and stuff yourself with the foods you craved and dreamed of all those long days while you were on a diet – or better said, while you were punishing yourself.

I truly believe that with self-flagellation (jumping in the other extreme of highly intensive physical exercising) or by inflicting emotional pain by very restrictive diets one cannot reach much of success. And by success I mean long term and sustainable results. Not the immediate drop in kg as much as what happens to your body and your mind once the draconian program ended and you are left to fend for yourself.

C9 provides you a frame in which you can make your own program, tailored to your life style and preferences, and to your personal goals.

For example, in some families breakfast together is important family time, while for others dinner is the most important meal of the day. While following the program guidelines and staying within the lines, you can make your own eating plan to fit your priorities. Here is one of the family dinners I was mentioning from one of my C9’ers. Healthy and delicious dinner she shared with her family.

Eating right doesn’t have to be a very painful process.

I just completed my C9 program together with a small group I coached through. We shared laughs and we shared moments and experiences that brought us closer. The immediate results in average for the group: 4 cm less in the waist/ 3 to 4 kg less in weight.

One of the girls who was having troubles with gastritis has not had any more episodes since DAY 2 of the program.

We have conquered back our wardrobe! Dug out dresses we liked so much but couldn’t zip up in a long while.

All this achieved in 9 days!

Full of energy so much that I could participate a 3 h Zumba marathon. Exercising can and should be fun. Some prefer the gym while others do bicycling or jogging. I Zumba. I am not professional; you can easily imagine my Zumba dancing by drawing a parallel with Phoebe’s running (reference from Friends TV series). But that is not the point. The point is to do what you love. Do it with confidence and enjoying every moment of it.

HOW TO CURE A NASTY HANGOVER

You know those nights? They’re the nights that become day. Full of dancing and howling at the moon. And there’s some kind of magic in those nights. They’re the nights that remind us what it means to connect. The nights that teach us how to leave everything behind. And live in the moment. They’re the nights that memories are made of. Yeah, you know those nights.” – wisdom words from famous alcohol brand’s latest commercial.

Yeah, we all know those nights. But what we also know are the mornings after.

And oh boy… some of them outplay the Magic of the previous night big time and remind me I am no longer 18.

I used to be the soul of the party. I used to dance till the morning, have one or several too many drinks and have a blast. Then shrug it all off after only couple of hours of sleep and bounce through the rest of the day. Yes – bounce. Now it’s much closer to a crawling motion…

Don’t get me wrong – while I enjoyed the occasional blast together with my peeps, I did not make it a regular habit. However, for me the ultimate warrior story is not about how memorable (though that was not always an option) were those party nights… it is about how I survived through the next day and what I tried to quicken the recovery. It doesn’t take long to find a list of hangover remedies, in some case legends. I’ve tried most of them.

Keep hydrated while partying. I even heard about drinking one glass of water for each glass of alcoholic beverage; my standing record – 2 glasses, then I usually loose track. But whenever I was still able to count my fingers, I tried to make sure I am having a last glass of water before succumbing to sleep – it’s a fact that alcohol dehydrates and drinking water is the least you can do to be kind to yourself.

Never drink on an empty stomach. Since we party with friends, it is usually combined with dinner or loads of starters, so drinking on empty stomach wasn’t really my thing. Probably without the food, my next morning hangover would have been even much worse. Food helps slow the absorption of alcohol, and the longer it takes the alcohol to reach your blood stream, the longer it is until you become intoxicated.

Natural Morning remedies. From all the different natural remedies that I tried by myself during my wild youth, somehow the most successful were still the morning after remedies. One of all-time favorites back in Romania is drinking the juice of pickled cabbage. The salty-sour drink is reach in vitamins C and B 12 and it helps the body to re-hydrate much quicker and get much needed minerals such as Magnesium or Potassium. Many of my conationals swear by it. Drink and live by it.

solanka03My version of the greasy food I went for when it was possible is a big portion of Solanka – fantastic for a weakened body in needs of a quick source of energy that helps with fighting the nausea. This thick Slavic soup has it all – olives, pickled stuff, several types of meat, potatoes, lemon and whatever else makes a good solanka according to the chef.

They say sweat it off. I say shag it off! It does have the same effects and it is a much more pleasurable way to power through, all while not even having to leave the comforts of your bed. And it can be the perfect continuation of the previous night’s endeavors, provided you are waking up in circumstances to your liking rather than to discover you would rather sweat it off by making a quick exit.

You know how there is this famous question that celebrities get to answer: What would you tell to your younger self? I am going to dig deeper there, given that I am raising two gorgeous and smart girls of my own.

But for now, this is me sharing with you what I would tell to my younger self, bent over with a splitting headache is:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Have fun as much as you can because responsibilities will never disappear
  • You are doing a fantastic job at picking good friends to share both wild celebrations and tough goings
  • Drink Aloe Vera – before you start partying and in the morning after you wake up. Aloe Vera gel is a natural, safe, and by far the most efficient method for getting rid of your hangovers.

You don’t have to believe me – google it. It’s the best known secret there is:

Aloe gel has the ability to re-hydrate the body, tackling the first problem of headaches, raging thirst and light sensitivity. It also detoxes the body so it helps it cope with the chemicals reducing depression. It stabilizes blood sugar levels and so it aids the elimination of alcohol more easily from the body relieving tiredness. It completely calms the stomach relieving nausea.

All you need is half a cup of the God’s Nectar before you head into the eye of the storm and another round when you wake up. The trick is to find the real deal: the purest gel there is, the next best thing to carrying around an Aloe potted plant to suck on between the shots.

My Travel Tips to staying fabulous from the inside

So, while we covered the necessities of basic travel bag content in the previous articles, there is another critical step in avoiding a holiday abroad unforgettable for the wrong reasons: a visit to the doctor to find out what vaccines you may need depending on your desired destination.iStock-000017522773Small

Even more important is to do this with sufficient time in advance rather than right before hopping on the plane, because most vaccines take up to 2 weeks to start working. Also, some may require repeat shots, such as the anti-rabies or the anti-hepatitis A ones.

Keep your urge of going wild for the adrenaline inducing activities you can join while on the road rather than for the hospital induced experiences you may have to live through if you chose to live life on the edge by not vaccinating before traveling.

Also, it is very good to keep in mind that only a part of the possible diseases which you could end up with can be prevented by vaccination. Should you have any long term or chronic illnesses you better discuss it with your doctor and prepare any needed medication you may need to carry with you.

When traveling overseas, the more exotic the place, the higher the probability that the water quality and food hygiene standards are very different than back home. Add to that a variety of local ingredients your body hasn’t been exposed to previously. So no matter how careful you are with your personal hygiene and how often you wash your hands, you will most probably end up enjoying episodes of the unpleasant gastroenterological troubles, some mild but others pretty aggressive.

In order to stay on top of it, many seasoned tourists will carry upon them some sort of preventive medication at all time – something along the lines of Smecta or Loperamids. Sometimes even some type of antibiotics or medicine against bacterial infections, too.

However, while this may be helping as a quick fix, there are several drawbacks from where I stand:

It is a medicine and this may not get along well with the alcohol you may be consuming while on vacation, testing unnecessarily the patience and strength of your liver.

They may have limited effect: during our trip to Indonesia couple of months back, my significant other insisted on not using the natural remedies I had in my bag. Which meant that few days into our trip he ended up taking his tablets 3 times a day. And had to know his surroundings at all times – meaning where the nearest toilet was for him to make a quick escape in case the medicine would cease to have effect unexpectedly. Basically, his derriere was either on fire or totally glued down for few hours after each tablet.

Indonesia04Me, meanwhile, I chose a different content for my well being: drinking pure Aloe Vera gel every morning on an empty stomach, followed by garlic supplements. Without the less aromatic consequences of consuming loads of fresh garlic, I made sure I could still benefit from the boost to my immune system by this powerful antioxidant; while allowing the Aloe to do its bit in fighting inflammations, help boosting the immune system and improve the function of and the general condition of the gut. Which meant no desperate need to make a run for it unexpectedly, too.

And no matter how crazy you may be about the local variety of fruits and fresh vegetables, some days you may just not feel you could take one more bite of the dragon fruit. And the weather is so damn hot that while you know you need nutrition, you cannot make yourself eat anything heavy. Or, you may have wandered so far off the beaten path that any half-decent feeding establishment may not be within your reach and having a welcoming dish from a warm smiling local is not an option. Either ways, in such cases a major savior is the protein cocktail: it can be mixed with anything, from simple water to coconut water or milk or soy milk, almond milk, rice milk, etc. I am carrying one package of this powder with me in my small backpack when traveling and it have come handy more than once.

Indonesia croppedHowever, regardless of how well prepared you are and how careful you are, at some point during your trip you are bound to relax and go with the flow. Which may bring also less pleasant consequences, like a nasty sunburn. So, a quick remedy as I also found out from all the massage and beauty salons that are populating the touristic side of Bali coasts, is the same magical Aloe Vera: this time in its topical format. Besides it anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, the Aloe topical gel soothes and calms irritation. It should be part of your first-aid kit and you should apply it generously both on bruised skin due to more rough activities or on sunburns as nasty as mine. Pack some and you won’t regret it!

Children are our forever superstars

We always give them our love; still, somehow around special occasions like Christmas or summer vacation they get more spoiled than ever.

Summer vacation is the time to reconnect and relax with family, to recreate favourite childhood memories and make new ones together. Do you see your family lying on a beach or around a resort pool, hiking mountain trails, learning history from a national park ranger, exploring a new city, being thrilled by an exotic adventure or a daring new theme park ride?

Here are some of the things that we also try for starting our children’s healthy summer habits that don’t necessarily mean going bankrupted over the summer.

Limit mobile phone, TV and computer time. Especially when the beautiful weather outside means there is absolutely no reason why the children should not be out there.

Estonia04Plan a time with them to get out of the house for walks, trips to the park or other physical activities. Baltics have an abundance of state parks that are outstanding options for fitness activities for families. From parks with tracks for the very energetic ones like the Tarzan Park in Sigulda, Latvia, to the ones who enjoy a more leisurely rest. Find a park close by and get going.  The picture here is from our last summer trip to Saaremaa in Estonia.

Consider extending the amount of time you and your child spend being active each day. Fitness experts say children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Walk or ride bikes together. Play badminton or beach football together. Trying simple games such as racing, jumping rope, skipping, or playing tag or hide-and-seek will get you and your kids moving together, and remind yourself how much fun playing can be. Especially when there are no other kids around to play with and your little one suffers from being lonely, you could try into their play mate for a while.

trees1Walking and moving freely is the very first adventure in children’s life. Give them the freedom to roam unrestricted within the safe territory you set, even climbing trees if they fancy so. They learn to master the movement through long practice and with patience, but also with bruises and other small injuries.
